Welcome to Ghyll Pool

Looking back towards Ghyll Pool

The return route is not in the same class as the only sensible way is mainly along roads, about a third along a main road and two thirds along lanes. We usually catch the bus back from Ambleside to Skelwith Bridge. If you wish to do this you need to time the walk carefully as the frequent Ambleside to Coniston bus does not go via Skelwith and you need to catch the less frequent 516 from Ambleside to Dungeon Ghyll. At the time of writing the most convenient buses are the 13.50 and 15.40 (15.50 on Saturday and Sunday) from Ambleside but do check the times (Traveline 0871 2002233).

This is a superb short walk over the shoulder of Loughrigg Fell with fantastic views of the Langdales in one direction and Windermere in the other before an enjoyable descent to Ambleside.
