This is an attractive short walk through woods and fields that can be combined with a ride on a steam train and a cruise on Windermere. It is ideal for children or a showery day when the walk can be done in a quick dash between raindrops. It is on quiet paths somewhat off the beaten track.
The walk described here starts at Newby Bridge Halt on the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. The parking near Newby Bridge Halt is quite limited so the suggested plan is to take the train from Haverthwaite Station, where there is a large car park, get out at at Newby Bridge Halt, walk to Lakeside and then catch the train back to Haverthwaite. Steam trains run daily at Easter and from the beginning of April to the end of October and the times can be confirmed by telephoning Haverthwaite Station (015395 31594) or visiting their web site at www.lakesiderailway.co.uk. Haverthwaite Station is on the A590 two miles west Newby Bridge.
An alternative plan is to get to Lakeside by using one of the famous steamers on Windermere from Waterhead near Ambleside or from Bowness. Catch the train to Newby Bridge Halt (or, for a longer train ride, to Haverthwaite then alight at Newby Bridge on the return) and start the walk from there. Brochures with the times of boats are widely available and can be confirmed on 015394 43360 or their web site.
